About us
We can help you in all areas of your building project.
Plum Architects was formed in 2010 from the expansion of a previous small practice set up by husband-and-wife team Richard and Deborah Bullen.
The building process can appear daunting but when approached in an ordered, step-by-step manner, we feel it can be both enjoyable and ultimately very rewarding. Plum Architects undertake a diverse range of project types and sizes from small domestic refurbishments to large commercial masterplans. Each is commenced with an approach tailored to a client’s specific needs. We are proud to note that a large proportion of our workload comes from clients who come back to us again and again.
We were recipients of the New Forest National Park Design Award in 2020 for the Clock House Gallery in Beaulieu.
In 2022 Deborah was part of the Sparsholt cohort receiving a BBC Gardeners’ World Platinum Award for a Beautiful Border at the Beaulieu Spring Fair.
Meet the team
Richard Bullen RIBA
Director, Architect
Richard studied architecture & gained his post-graduate diploma at Portsmouth School of Architecture. He was elected to corporate membership of the RIBA in 1995.
After working for busy commercial practices in the UK he became a lead architect for a large commercial company in Southeast Asia. In 2005 he founded his own practice so he could return to the hands-on involvement in projects that he most enjoyed. This was dovetailed with the completion of small local housebuilding developments giving unique insight into all sides of the construction process.
When not designing or building something himself he’s probably out cycling or playing tennis.
Deborah Bullen
Director, Administrator, Garden Designer
Deborah studied accounting and finance at Leeds Business School and worked in the City of London for several years. This was followed by a post-graduate certificate in education at Roehampton Institute and a rewarding period teaching in Japan and Southeast Asia.
In 2023, following a life-long passion for gardening, she gained a diploma in garden design from Sparsholt College, adding this discipline to the list of services offered by Plum Architects.
When office work is done, and she’s not cycling or walking she escapes to a garden somewhere.
“The annexe provides practical & aesthetically pleasing solutions for my disabled adult son & his carers. The main house extension has a marvellous connection with the newly planted prairie style borders. I’m delighted with the results, thank you both.”
